In the news: Chrysler Jeep Superstores has announced last Tuesday that they will sponsor the “Super Bowl” of powerboat racing which transpire at the Detroit River on weekend of July 13-15, 2007. The announcement was made the President of Chrysler Jeep Superstores Advertising Association of Southern Michigan, Jim Schebil who said, “This is the oldest motor sports trophy in the world and draws the fastes power boats in the world to the Detroit River as the world watches the best drivers in the world to fight for the Gold Cup.”

Schebil further added, “The deep, fast waters of the Detroit River are universally recognized in power boat racing as the most challenging water race course in the world. These boats are really flying wings that barely touch the water at 200 mph on race course that changes every second under the boat.”

The public is invited to witness the unlimited hydroplane boats skim on top of the water covering a football field in less than one second at more than 200 mph with 3,000 horsepower engines. Other details on the race will be announced in the spring by Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, Schebil and the Detroit River Regatta Association (DRRA) officials.

The Gold Cup was originally crafted by artisans at Tiffany & Co. in 1901 and was fully restored and refurbished in 2004. The DRRA is a voluntary association comprising of several hundred racing enthusiasts and sponsors family-friendly party on the river with the Gold Cup racers during the three-day festival.
